Thomas Ansorg

Tom is Conflict Prevention Adviser for Saferworld. He has several years of experience working on arms, conflict and security issues.

He co-ordinates our work on conflict-sensitive development and regularly works with and trains governments, civil society and international donors on this issue.

He also has expertise in Africa, having previously worked as Saferworld's Team Leader for the Africa programme.

Previously, Tom has worked at Swisspeace and the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD).

Tom has an MSc in Development Studies.

Larry Attree

Larry Attree joined Saferworld in 2007 and is Team Leader for our Asia Programme.

He is responsible for Saferworld's projects on arms and security issues in South Asia including Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Prior to taking up his post at Saferworld, he worked on security and development with a variety of UN and other international agencies, NGOs and the corporate sector in Europe, the Pacific, Asia and Africa.

Larry holds Masters degrees in Social and Political Thought and English Literature and Classics

Edouard Belloncle

Edouard is one of two Security and Justice Sector Development Advisers who support Saferworld in its work on Security Sector Reform (SSR) in Africa, Europe and South-Asia.

He helps Saferworld to develop in-house policies, guidelines and tools and works to monitor and influence the international policy agenda on SSR He has authored and co-authored a number of academic articles and strategy papers on SSR in post-conflict environment for governmental agencies. He was previously Regional Programme Manager for Middle East and North Africa at the Centre for Security Sector Management (CSSM).

He has also worked on police, justice and prison sector reform with the European Commission in Lebanon. Edouard holds an MA in Intelligence and International Security from the Department of War Studies, King's College London

Subindra Bogati

Subindra is our Project Officer in Nepal where he develops and implements strategies on security sector reform and small arms and light weapons.

Before joining Saferworld, Subindra worked with a number of civil society groups, produced documentaries (specialising in human rights, peace and conflict, HIV / AIDS and environmental issues) and worked as a political reporter for an English daily.

His areas of expertise include security, conflict, development and political issues, especially in Nepal. He has experience in giving media interviews.

Subindra has Masters degrees in both International Relations and Anthropology and is fluent in English, Nepali and Hindi.

Ivan Campbell

Ivan is Saferworld's Head of Africa Programme and has over 10 years experience of working on conflict and peacebuilding issues in Africa.

Ivan works with governments, donors, international organisations and civil society, and has particular expertise of conflict, security and arms issues in the Horn of Africa.

Previously, Ivan managed the Great Lakes Programmes at International Alert.

Ivan has an MA in Development Studies.

Rosy Cave

Rosy joined Saferworld in 2007 as our Head of Asia programme. She is leading our work on conflict, community safety, security and arms in Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

She has experience of working on security issues including on disarmament such as small arms, mine action, cluster munitions and explosive remnants of war, having previously worked as project manager at the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) and at Landmine Action, including as Acting Deputy Director. She was also part of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines and the Cluster Munition Coalition.

Rosy has an MSc in Latin American Politics and a BSc in Social Anthropology. She has experience in giving media interviews to radio and television.

Peter Cross

Peter Cross is the Team Leader for our Africa Programme. He has extensive experience of working with conflict, small arms and security issues in Africa.

His work has includes conducting small arms surveys, conflict analysis, peacebuilding and conflict prevention.

Peter has authored and co-authored a number of research papers and policy briefs and has experience in giving media interviews to radio and television.

Previously, Peter was Team Leader for Saferworld's Asia programme.

Catherine Flew

Catherine is our Project Co-ordinator for the Africa programme. She is normally based in London but will be working from Kampala throughout 2008.

Catherine has five years experience working on security and development issues in Africa with expertise in research, training and policy development on small arms control and conflict sensitive-development. She has a particular focus on East Africa.

Catherine holds an MSc in International Politics.

Virginie Giarmana

Virginie co-ordinates our work in Brussels with the European Council, Commission, Parliament and member states on our work in Africa, Asia and Europe.

She has experience working to with the EU on issues of arms transfer controls, conflict-sensitive development and security sector reform.

Before joining Saferworld, Virginie worked as Co-ordinator for the European Coalition for Corporate Justice and as Director of Amnesty International's office in Luxembourg.

Virginie has experience in giving media interviews to radio and television.

Virginie holds a Diplôme d’Etudes Approfondies in International Relations.

Hesta Groenewald

Hesta is a Conflict Prevention Adviser for Saferworld and co-ordinates our work on conflict-sensitive development. She regularly works with and trains governments, civil society and international donors on this and broader conflict prevention issues.

Hesta has also worked on promoting conflict prevention and the role of civil society in European Union development assistance in the Horn of Africa, and has experience on policy and programme development in security sector reform.

She is the author and/or co-author of numerous research papers, reports, policy briefings and articles on conflict prevention and conflict-sensitive development.

Hesta has a post-graduate degree in International Relations and previously worked at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.

Roy Isbister

Roy is Saferworld's team leader on arms transfers.

He has worked in this area for nearly ten years, and has considerable experience in developing and implementing strategies to promote the adoption of responsible arms transfer control strategies at national, regional and international levels. He has a Master's in International Relations from the University of Kent.

Roy is the author and/or editor of numerous research papers, reports, policy briefings and articles on arms transfer control policies.

Press experience: Roy regularly contributes to national, regional and international media on arms issues.

Astrit Istrefi

Astrit joined us as a Kosovo-based Project Co-ordinator after nine years experience in community development, humanitarian assistance, community safety and civil society development.

He has previously worked on Kosovo for the Forum for Civic Initiatives and the East West Management Institute. He has also worked for the OSCE’s election department and with the International Organisation for Migration on Iraq ‘out-of-country voting’ and in Afghanistan.

During the Kosovo conflict, Astrit played a valuable voluntary role co-ordinating humanitarian assistance and providing accommodation for Kosovar refugees in Albania.

He is active in a number of civic and cultural organizations in Kosovo.

Faisa Loyaan

Based in Nairobi, Faisa co-ordinates our work in Somalia focussing on creating dialogue on development, peace and security issues between Somali non-state actors, local authorities and the international community.

Before joining us in 2004, she supported conflict-affected Somali refugees living in the UK, was a consultant with DfID in Nigeria and worked with a variety of NGOs in Bangladesh, Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda and the UK.

As well as her geographical experience, Faisa has particular expertise in supporting dialogue processes, peace-building and conflict-sensitive approaches to development.

Faisa holds an MA in Gender Analysis in Development and speaks fluent Somali.

Bernardo Mariani

Bernardo is a Strategic Issues Adviser based in Vienna.

He is has 13 years of international experience on arms control and security issues. He joined Saferworld in 1999 having previously worked at the International Secretariat of Amnesty International. His work has focussed on enhancing the capacities of civil society, governments and law enforcement agencies to tackle arms proliferation. He has managed and implemented advocacy, research and training activities particularly across Europe, Russia and China in cooperation with governments, regional and international organisations, law enforcement agencies and civil society.  He has also worked as a consultant for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the European Commission, developing technical assistance guidelines to combat firearms trafficking.   

Bernardo holds a Master’s degree in Political Science.

Mia Marzouk

As Team Leader for our Europe Programme, Mia's expertise includes arms control, community safety and security issues in Eastern, South Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus and Russia.

She works with governments and civil society, and has designed, researched and written surveys and policy papers at Saferworld.

Previously Mia worked as an Associate and Europe Editor at Jane's Information Group and has also worked as a researcher at Chatham House. She has a Masters degree in European Studies.

Mia has experience in giving media interviews to radio and television.

Sue Maskell

Sue is our Head of Operations and a member of the senior management team. She manages our fundraising, finances and human resources, and is responsible for ensuring that Saferworld operates effectively and efficiently in the UK and overseas.

Sue’s business and managerial experience has been gained in a varied career both in the non-profit and academic sectors.

Graham Mathias

Graham joined us as a part-time adviser on policing and security and justice sector development in 2002. Since then he has worked on these issues in Albania, Georgia, Jamaica, Kenya, Malawi, Moldova, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Yemen. Graham helped the UK government develop guidelines for UK police officers sent on overseas peace support missions and was engaged with developing material for the OECD-DAC guidelines on security sector reform.

Graham's policing expertise draws from over 30 years spent with the Metropolitan Police Service as well as time spent working as a policing adviser with the FCO and DfID, amongst others.

Graham has an MSc in Economics and experience giving press interviews on the above issues.

Richard Nabudere

Based in Kampala, Richard is a team leader on our Africa programme and is responsible for our programme of work in Uganda.

Before joining Saferworld, Richard spent over 25 years working in the Ugandan Police Force, achieving the rank of Commissioner in 2003.

Prior to Saferworld, he was Co-ordinator for the Uganda National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons and was Head of the Uganda Conflict Early Warning and Early Response Unit.

Richard has extensive expertise in small arms and light weapons control, police management and conflict prevention. He also has experience giving media interviews on these subjects.

Richard holds an MA in Social Sector Planning and Management.

Robert Parker

Robert joined Saferworld in 2006 and is the Head of our Strategic Issues team. He has extensive experience on security and arms-related issues having previously worked as a Geneva-based arms policy advisor for Oxfam, Campaign Manager on the arms and security trade at Amnesty International UK and having done consultancy work for various organisations including Landmine Action and the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining.

Robert has experience in giving interviews to radio, television and print media on a range of issues including arms transfer controls, policing and strategic campaigning. He has a post-graduate degree from the Institute of Latin American Studies.

Simon Rynn

Simon Rynn is one of two security and justice sector development advisers who support Saferworld in its work on these issues.

He helps Saferworld to develop in-house policies, guidelines and tools and works to monitor and influence the international policy agenda on security sector reform.

Simon has authored and co-authored a number of arms and security research papers, policy briefs and training materials. He was previously Team Leader for the South East Europe and East Europe programmes at Saferworld and has also worked for UNDP and UK development charities.

Simon has an MSc in International Relations.

Henry Smith

Henry is Director of Saferworld, having previously managed the Europe and Asia teams.

Henry has several years of experience of working with conflict, small arms and security issues in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, Russia, Sudan and South Asia.

His work has included arms surveys, analyses of security sector reform projects and the designing and management of civil society projects. Henry has authored and co-authored a number of research papers, policy briefs and training materials.

Previously, Henry has worked at the International Secretariat of Amnesty International and at Oxfam GB. Henry is currently preparing a PhD focusing on small arms control and long term peacebuilding and development frameworks in post-conflict environments.

Angus Urquhart

Angus is our Small Arms and Transfer Controls Adviser and has almost ten years of experience working on armed conflict and security issues, particularly in Africa.

He has worked with governments on the development of national policies on small arms and has extensive experience of policy research and implementation, including delivering training for government and civil society representatives.

Angus has a Master's in International Relations and has authored and co-authored a number of research papers and policy briefs.
