Saferworld at World Water Week

In August, Saferworld gave presentations at two seminars during World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden. These drew on experiences from conflict-sensitive development work in Uganda with partners the Center for Conflict Resolution, the Rwenzori Development and Research Centre and the Youth Development Organisation.

The first seminar was co-hosted with the Gender and Water Alliance and looked at how water could be both a cause of conflict and a tool for solving it. Saferworld used the opportunity to share lessons from our work in Uganda and present our new ‘Water and conflict’ report to an eager audience. Lambert Olweny then talked about his experience of conflict sensitivity as a district water engineer with the Kasese District Local Government.

“The seminar went really well and participants were very interested in the added value that adopting a conflict-sensitive approach to water delivery could bring,” said Hesta Groenewald, conflict prevention adviser.

Saferworld also gave a presentation at a seminar entitled ‘Water supply and sanitation: After disaster and conflict situations in fragile states’, where very different experiences from conflict-affected countries were reflected. The presentation focused on lessons learned from Uganda but also highlighted some specific challenges related to conflict-sensitive water service delivery in the north of the country.
