Somali peace activists killed

Since June, three leading Somali peace activists associated with Saferworld’s work have been the victims of targeted killings.

On June 11, Mohamed Abdulle Mahdi was shot dead in Mogadishu; on June 22, Mohamed Hassan Kulmiye was shot dead in Beletweyne; and on July 2, Abdikarim Sh. Ibrahim was shot dead in Mogadishu.

Numerous other Somali civil society activists and humanitarian aid workers have also been killed in recent months in South-Central Somalia as the humanitarian and security situation has dramatically deteriorated.

Saferworld condemns these deliberate killings of individuals dedicated to peace and development in Somalia.

We strongly urge that the perpetrators of these crimes are brought to justice. We offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to the families and colleagues of the murdered activists.
